How to make Hong Kong-style milk tea

by mikechiu

Hong Kong-style milk tea

4-5 teaspoons of tea.

2 cups of water.

Condensed milk.

(See recommended brands below)

Boil the water. As the water is heating up, throw the tea in. Stir the tea as the water boils. Wait until the leaves sink. The tea should be very dark. Depending on how sweet your condensed milk is and how sweet you'd like your tea, add 1-2 teaspoons of condensed milk per cup. For Taiwanese style, replace the condensed milk with sugar. Add milk or cream for a less watery taste.

Recommendations:

  • I switched from using loose leaf Twinings English Breakfast to a few bags of Lipton tea. Lipton tea tastes almost as good and is much cheaper.
  • For condensed milk, Longevity seems to hold a "monopoly" on the US Cantonese community. It's not too sweet like Nestle. Buy it at your local Asian grocery store or try Walmart.
